With the making of the movie, Did You Hear About the Morgans?, a scene for the National Breast Cancer Foundation was written into the script by Director Marc Lawrence. When I asked him why he chose NBCF to be in the movie, he said he wanted to do some good and help a real charity.
We were additionally invited to be in the scene as extras. Our son, Kevin Hail-COO and his wife, Amanda, as well as my husband, Neal, and I headed for NYC for the filming of the movie. My immediate thoughts: What am I going to wear? This was my first experience at movie stardom. Could that be my one second of fame?
From a recent foot surgery, I was more concerned about how I was going to get from tennis shoes to high heels in time for the movie making. My Dallas surgeon, Dr. Sandra Gold, reassured me she could get me into the heels. Sure enough, my first weekend to spring into my fashionable shoes came as we flew into NYC.
The setting for our scene was at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel from a ballroom overlooking glittering NYC. Round banquet tables dressed with luxurious floral arrangements in variations of pink topped each table. Three hundred actors and four amateurs filed into the room and found seats at their designated tables. We were seated at the banquet table with Sarah Jessica Parker, who played a wealthy New York socialite that was giving a fundraising speech for NBCF. Our banners were all over the room and at the podium.
Approximately five hours of sitting in one spot, with mammoth cameras on tracks moving around us, and trying to look natural while actors surrounding us carried on, the three minute scene was captured. During that time I thought several times, Why was I so worried about my feet showing? They are under the table anyway. No one will see them.
At one point during the filming, I was tapped on the shoulder and politely asked to please remove the glass of water by my shoe because it showed up in the film. That is about as humorous as life gets. When you think paying attention to the details of your life is unimportant, you get a shoe shot in a major motion picture.
Yes, it was exciting to talk to Sarah Jessica Parker and Hugh Grant. They are both great actors and we can hardly wait to go to the premiere of the movie tomorrow night. I don’t know if my feet will be in the movie, but I can tell you for sure that I put my best foot forward.
See you at the movies on December 18th, Did You Hear About the Morgans?
