If Life is One Big Mess
Sometimes people are quick to give you advice about moving forward in your life when you are in a mess. “Just do it,” they say.
It’s not so easy to undo a messed up life, but I want to show you how you can effectively start a forward motion toward the life you desire by going backward.
Stranded in the Ocean
This week in the news, the captain and crew on a tuna boat were stranded in the Atlantic Ocean. Their engine was working, but they could not move forward because the gears had stripped, leaving them abandoned with no possible help available for at least 12 hours.
After some time, they were able to get the reverse gear working. The captain gave the order to the crew that they were going to steer backward to get to their home port. To accomplish this difficult task, they had to also reverse the names of the sides of the boat. Port, the left side of the boat, and starboard, the right side, were switched so the crew would not be confused as the captain gave commands.
Safe Harbour
It took hours to reach their destination, but they arrived at a safe harbor. While they were far out in the ocean, everything was strange and unfamiliar during the time they were stranded. Sailing backward threw off the reading of their compass, so they had to stop periodically and readjust it.
When things were not working, they had to go back to a place where they could get supplies and repair for their boat. They returned to the last place where everything went right for them.
How to Get Out of the Mess
When your life gets turned upside down, it is easy to start making bad judgments. One wrong turn can lead to another, until your life is a tangled web of mistakes. Don’t let breast cancer throw you into a panic and cause you to lose your sense of right and wrong. Here are some simple, uncomplicated steps of action that are proven to work:
- Observe your surroundings realistically. If all you can see is the trouble you are in, get outside help to objectively assess your situation.
- Think back to a time when life was good for you. What was it about that place in life that brought you happiness?
- Take a backward step of action that will return you to your place of happiness. It does not have to be a physical location. Usually it is a frame of mind where you can have clear thinking and make good judgment that takes you down a pathway of an enjoyable life.
Go back to your safe harbor. Repair your life so that you can clearly decide where you want to steer your life. Breast cancer does not have to be the end of your life. Many people have told me it was the defining moment in their lives when life took on new meaning.

A pessimist looks at a glass and says it is half empty.
An engineer looks at a glass and says that the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.”
